What to check before you buy
A full out-of-water survey by a qualified marine surveyor is essential before buying any used boat. They will check the hull, deck, engine, rigging, and all systems. The cost (typically £15–£25 per foot) is money well spent against a potentially expensive mistake.
UK boats over 7m used commercially, or any boat used in foreign waters, should be registered on the SSR or Part 1 Register. Check the registration is current and matches the vessel. Also verify there's no outstanding marine mortgage.
Marine diesel engines are rated in hours. A well-maintained engine with 2,000 hours is better than a neglected one with 500. Ask for full service records, check the impeller has been replaced regularly, and look for signs of overheating or oil leaks.
Check whether a mooring is included in the sale or needs to be arranged separately — marina berths can be expensive and waiting lists long. Ensure you can get insurance before committing; some older or non-standard vessels can be difficult to insure.
