Vehicle History Check Guide
Why you should always run a vehicle history check before buying a used car — and what to look for in the results.
What is a vehicle history check?
A vehicle history check (also called an HPI check) searches national databases to reveal a vehicle's hidden history — including outstanding finance, write-off records, stolen vehicle alerts, and mileage discrepancies.
Why you need one
1 in 3 used cars has a hidden history problem. Buying a car with outstanding finance means the finance company can repossess it even if you paid the seller in good faith.
What a history check reveals
Outstanding finance, insurance write-off (Cat A, B, C, D, N, S), stolen vehicle records, mileage discrepancies (clocking), number of previous owners, and import/export history.
How to run a check
Use a reputable provider such as HPI, Experian AutoCheck, or the DVLA's free MOT history checker at gov.uk. A full HPI check costs around £10–£20 and is worth every penny.
Understanding write-off categories
Cat A and B vehicles must be scrapped. Cat S (structural damage) and Cat N (non-structural damage) can be repaired and returned to the road but must be declared to insurers and will affect value.
