What to check before you buy
Damp is the biggest issue with used caravans. Use a damp meter on all walls, roof, and floor. Check around windows, roof lights, and the front panel. Even minor damp can lead to expensive repairs if left untreated.
All UK caravans built after 1992 should be registered on CRIS (Caravan Registration & Identification Scheme). Check the VIN plate matches the CRIS certificate and that the caravan isn't recorded as stolen or subject to outstanding finance.
Check the chassis for corrosion, especially on older caravans. Inspect the hitch, jockey wheel, corner steadies, and tyres (including age — tyres over 5 years old should be replaced regardless of tread depth).
Test 12V and 240V systems, all lights, water pump, and heating. For gas, check the regulator, pipework, and all appliances. A Gas Safe engineer should inspect the system if you have any doubts — gas leaks in a confined space are extremely dangerous.
