What to check before you buy
Before buying any used car, run an HPI or similar vehicle history check. This reveals outstanding finance, write-off status, stolen records, mileage discrepancies, and number plate changes. A clean check is essential — never skip it.
A pre-purchase inspection from the AA, RAC, or an independent mechanic costs around £100–£200 and can save you thousands. They check the engine, gearbox, brakes, tyres, bodywork, and electrics — giving you full confidence or negotiating power.
A full service history (FSH) with stamped book or digital records significantly increases a car's value and reliability. Check the stamps match the mileage, and that major services (cam belt, brake fluid, coolant) have been done on schedule.
The V5C (logbook) must match the car's VIN, registration, and colour. Check the seller's name matches the V5C — if buying privately, the seller should be the registered keeper. Never buy a car without a V5C.
