What to check before you buy
Any coach used for hire or reward requires a PSV (Public Service Vehicle) operator's licence. Check the seller holds a valid licence and that the vehicle is correctly licensed. Buying a coach without understanding the licensing requirements can be a costly mistake.
Coaches used commercially must be maintained to DVSA standards. Request the full maintenance records, MOT history, and any DVSA prohibition notices. A coach with a poor maintenance history is a significant liability and may fail its next MOT.
Coach bodywork repairs are expensive. Check for corrosion on the chassis, particularly around the wheel arches and underframe. Inspect the body panels for accident damage, delamination, or poor repairs. A pre-purchase inspection by a specialist is strongly recommended.
Coaches used commercially must have a calibrated tachograph. Drivers need a Category D licence and a Driver CPC qualification. Verify the tachograph is current and that you understand the driver requirements before purchasing for commercial use.
