What to check before you buy
The battery is the most expensive component of an e-bike. Ask for the battery's charge cycle count and test the range on a full charge. A healthy battery should retain at least 80% of its original capacity. Replacement batteries typically cost £300–£800.
Test the motor in all assist modes. Listen for unusual noises from the motor or drivetrain. Check the chain, cassette, and chainring for wear. Mid-drive motors (Bosch, Shimano, Brose) are generally more reliable than hub motors but more expensive to repair.
To be legally ridden on UK roads without a licence, an e-bike must be an EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle): motor up to 250W, maximum assisted speed 15.5mph, and pedal assistance only (no throttle-only mode). Check the bike meets these requirements.
Some e-bikes have been "derestricted" to exceed the legal 15.5mph limit. This is illegal on public roads and voids the warranty. Check the motor software is unmodified. Also verify whether the manufacturer's warranty is transferable to a new owner.
