What to check before you buy
As of 2024, privately owned e-scooters are NOT legal to ride on public roads, pavements, or cycle lanes in the UK. They can only be ridden on private land with the landowner's permission. Government rental scheme scooters are legal in trial areas only. Always check the latest regulations before buying.
The battery is the most critical component. Ask for the battery's charge cycle count and test the range on a full charge. A healthy battery should retain at least 80% of its original capacity. Replacement batteries can cost £100–£400 depending on the model.
Check the deck for cracks or damage. Test the folding mechanism — it should lock securely with no play. Test both brakes (most scooters have front and rear). Check tyre condition and pressure. Solid tyres don't puncture but give a harsher ride; pneumatic tyres are more comfortable but can puncture.
Water damage is a common issue with used e-scooters. Check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating — IPX4 or higher is recommended for UK weather. Look for signs of corrosion around the charging port, motor, and battery compartment. Water damage can cause electrical faults that are expensive to repair.
