What to check before you buy
Always verify the V5C logbook matches the bike's VIN and registration. Check the MOT history on the DVLA website — it shows mileage at each test, which can reveal clocking. A full service history is a strong indicator of a well-maintained bike.
Tyres are expensive — check tread depth and age (look for the DOT code on the sidewall; replace tyres over 5 years old). Check chain tension and sprocket wear. Inspect brake pads and discs. These are safety-critical items that add up quickly.
Check for scratches on the engine casings, bar ends, and footpegs — these indicate a drop or crash. Inspect the frame for cracks or repairs. Check both forks for straightness and leaks. A bent frame is a write-off.
Run an HPI or similar check to reveal outstanding finance, stolen status, and write-off history. Many used bikes are on finance — if unpaid, the finance company can repossess it after you've bought it.
