What to check before you buy
Damp is the number one issue with used motorhomes. Use a damp meter on all walls, roof, and floor. Check around windows, roof lights, and the cab area. Delamination of the bodywork panels is expensive to repair and often a sign of long-term damp ingress.
A motorhome should have an annual habitation service covering the gas system, electrical systems, water system, and damp check. A full service history from an approved workshop significantly increases value and gives peace of mind.
Motorhomes over 3,500kg MAM require a Category C1 licence (or C1+E for towing). If you passed your test before 1 January 1997, you may already have C1 entitlement. Check your licence before buying a large motorhome.
Test the heating (Truma/Alde), water pump, fridge (12V, 240V, and gas modes), hob, oven, and all 12V and 240V sockets. Check the leisure battery condition and solar panel output if fitted. A weak leisure battery is a common and easily overlooked issue.
