What to check before buying used construction plant
Plant machinery is rated in engine hours. A 5,000-hour excavator is high-worked but not necessarily worn out — service history matters more. Under 3,000 hours on a modern machine is considered low.
On tracked machines, undercarriage wear is the most expensive repair. Check track pad thickness, sprocket wear, and roller condition. Verify all attachments (buckets, quick hitches) are included and in working order.
Lifting equipment (cranes, telehandlers, aerial platforms) must have a current LOLER thorough examination certificate. Operators require CPCS or NPORS cards. Always request documentation before purchase.
Plant theft is a major issue in the UK. Verify the machine against the CESAR Plant & Equipment Register and run an HPI check for outstanding finance. Check the PIN plate matches the documentation.
