What to check before you buy a used tractor
Agricultural machinery is rated in engine hours. A tractor with 3,000 hours is roughly equivalent to 150,000 miles on a car. Under 2,000 hours is considered low for a modern tractor.
The hydraulic system and Power Take-Off (PTO) are the most expensive components to repair. Check for leaks, test all hydraulic functions, and verify PTO engagement at all speeds.
Agricultural machinery should have a service record. Check the chassis/serial number against the V5C or equivalent documentation. Verify any outstanding finance via HPI check.
Roll-Over Protection Structures (ROPS) are legally required on tractors used on public roads. Verify the cab or frame meets current safety standards, especially on older machines.
