What to check before you buy
For trucks over 3.5 tonnes, check the vehicle's history with the DVLA and DVSA. Verify the MOT history and any prohibitions. A truck with a history of DVSA prohibitions or failed inspections is a red flag — it suggests poor maintenance.
Check the chassis rails for cracks, repairs, and corrosion — especially around the fifth wheel and rear suspension. Inspect the cab for rust, particularly around the door sills, floor, and windscreen surround. Check all lights, mirrors, and safety equipment.
All trucks used commercially must have a calibrated tachograph. Check the calibration certificate is current (required every 2 years). Review the full service history — trucks need regular oil changes, brake inspections, and annual MOTs (Class V or VI).
Run an HPI or commercial vehicle check before buying. Many trucks are on finance or lease — if unpaid, the finance company can repossess the vehicle after purchase. Also check for any DVLA or DVSA enforcement notices against the vehicle.
