What to check before you buy
Utility vehicles rely heavily on hydraulic systems for attachments. Test all hydraulic functions, check for leaks, and verify attachment compatibility. Hydraulic repairs are expensive — inspect thoroughly before buying.
Lifting utility vehicles (telehandlers, forklifts) must have current LOLER inspection certificates. PUWER applies to all work equipment. Ask for all inspection records — missing certificates can mean the machine cannot be used legally.
Utility vehicles are rated in engine hours. Check the hour meter against service records. A well-maintained machine with 3,000 hours is better than a neglected one with 1,000. Look for oil leaks and listen for unusual engine noise.
Test 4WD, diff lock, and all safety interlocks. Modern utility vehicles have multiple safety systems — ensure all are functioning. A missing or bypassed safety interlock is a serious red flag.
