What to check before you buy
Every van has a maximum payload — the weight it can legally carry. Check the plate inside the driver's door for the gross vehicle weight (GVW) and subtract the kerb weight to find the payload. Overloading is illegal and dangerous.
Commercial vans take a hammering. Check the load floor, bulkhead, and rear doors for damage, rust, and leaks. Roof racks and racking systems can hide damage — remove them if possible. Check the roof for dents and leaks around roof lights.
High-mileage vans are common — a full service history is essential. Check that oil changes, timing belt/chain, and brake fluid have been done on schedule. Diesel vans need DPF checks; ask if it's been regenerated regularly.
Run an HPI or similar check on any used van. Many commercial vehicles are on finance — if the seller hasn't paid it off, the finance company can repossess the van after you've bought it. Also check for Cat S/N write-off status.
