Buying a Motorbike Guide

Everything you need to know before buying a used motorbike in the UK — from licence requirements to what to check on inspection.

Check your licence category

In the UK, you need at least a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate to ride a moped or motorcycle. A full A licence is required for bikes over 35kW. Check what you are legally allowed to ride before buying.

Choose the right type

Naked bikes are great for beginners. Sports bikes are fast but less comfortable for commuting. Adventure bikes are versatile. Cruisers are comfortable for long distances.

Inspect the bike

Check tyre tread depth (minimum 1mm, but replace at 2mm). Look for chain wear, brake pad thickness, and any oil leaks. Check the frame for cracks or repairs.

Run a history check

Always run a vehicle history check on any used motorbike. Check for outstanding finance, stolen records, and mileage discrepancies.
